Zelenskyy inspects corvettes being built for Ukraine in Türkiye


Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited a shipyard where two corvettes are being built for Ukraine on his trip to Türkiye.

Quote: “Visit to Türkiye. Istanbul. Shipyards where corvettes for our Navy are being built. I inspected the equipment and the stage of construction of the Ivan Mazepa corvette, and talked to members of the Ukrainian Navy. Thank you for your service. We are making our state stronger.”

Details: Zelenskyy said that he also assessed the construction process of the second corvette of the Ada class, which he named after Ukrainian hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi.

Zelenskyy thanked the Turkish president and all Turkish and Ukrainian defence companies “working jointly to bring peace closer and make it reliable”.

Background:

  • In August 2023 it was reported that Türkiye would build a second Ada-type corvette for the needs of the Ukrainian Navy, and the keel has been laid at one of the shipyards in Istanbul.
  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has decreed that an Ada-class corvette of the Armed Forces of Ukraine which is being built in Türkiye is to be named after 17th-century Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi.
  • In August 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave a name to the first Ada-class corvette in the Ukrainian Navy. The corvette will be called Ivan Mazepa. It will be built for Ukraine by Türkiye.
