US Warns Greek Cypriots, Greek Cypriot Leader Honors EOKA

Kennedy in a statement for the Greek newspaper Etnos noted that it would make an important contribution to this issue if the Greek Cypriots were to reveal their opinions in written form to the United Nations Secretary General. Kennedy also pointed out that if the parties agree, a negotiation among Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriots would be supported. On the other hand, Greek Cypriot leader Tasos Papadopulous revealed that he would not yield to solution "pressures". He spoke in praise of the National Organization of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA) during a ceremony, in which families of 108 members received a "medal of honor", and apologized for the "50 years of neglect", he said: "We apologize that for 50 years the government had neglected to recognize the heroes who had sacrificed their lives and we will now honor them with the appropriate recognition through their children and remaining relatives."
