US wants to deploy its troops in Cyprus

The US officials recalled that the Turkish side in Cyprus seriously worries about their safety and said, “The US can remove this anxiety of security by deploying its troops in the island and provide extra guatantees.” Same officials also said that Washington would also strengthen its geopolitical and geostrategical importance in the Mediterranean.

IMPORTANT FOR ENERGY BASIN

The US sees Cyprus having a strategic importance for its closeness to the energy basins in the Middle East, Caucasus and Africa and the safety for the energy corridors like Baku-Ceyhan.

The officials said that the island is also important for the US to strenghten its both political and strategic power in the Mediterranean, which is currently under the control of the European Union.

US’s NEW MILITARY STRUCTURING

The Pentagon aims to transfer its troops in the Europe to the Middle Europe countries like Poland, Bulgaria and Romania. Washington carries out its talks with Ankara to use Incirlik base and may be to open a second one in this framework. The target is to raise the urgent intervention capacity in the Mid-Asia and Middle East and form a security chain.

GUARANTOR STATE DEMAND

Washington also demands to provide a guarantor state status in Cyprus. Hence, it will create a political base and it will also gain the possibility to act as one of the parts in the negotiation table.

US President George W. Bush had written a letter to both Turkish and Greek Cypriot sides and the White House administration had started to put pressure on the Greek side after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s meeting with United Nations Secretry-General Kofi Annan.
