US military shows first video pictures of Saddam
“This is a great day in Iraq’s history. For decades hundreds of thousands of you suffered at the hand of this cruel man. Those days are over for ever,” US civil administrator Paul Bremer said.
“Saddam was captured without resistance… He is currently under coalition custody … at an undisclosed location…
There were no injuries, and in fact not a single shot was fired during the operation… Saddam Hussein the captive is talkative and being cooperative,” US forces commander in Iraq Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez said, adding that he was in possession of 750,000 dollars.
A brief video clip of Saddam after his capture was shown to press members. The ex-president had a heavy black and grey beard and was undergoing a medical examination. Two mugshots of Saddam, one with his beard and one after he was shaved, were shown amid shouting, “death to Saddam!” and “Long live Iraq.”
Saddam had left from Baghdad before invading US-led coalition forces occupied the capital on April 9
