Ukraine’s president visits Volyn region near border with Poland, Belarus

ISTANBUL

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday visited his country’s northwestern region of Volyn, where the country borders Poland and Belarus.

“It is an honor for me to be here today to thank our border guards for protecting the state border. For the protection of our state in Bakhmut. I know how firmly you stood there, holding Bakhmut,” Zelenskyy said in a message on Telegram.

Zelenskyy said in a later statement on Telegram that he had a meeting with local authorities in the region, during which the equipment and protection of the state border, the socio-economic and security situation in the region, and the arrangement of fortification and defense engineering structures were discussed.

“Heard reports on the situation in the area of responsibility of the ‘Volyn’ operational group of troops and the readiness of military units to perform tasks, as well as on measures to strengthen the state border within the Volyn region,” he also said.

Separately, a statement by the Ukrainian presidency said Zelenskyy familiarized himself with the arrangement of the state border in the area.

It added: “As reported to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in order to ensure reliable protection of the Ukrainian border and readiness to repel a possible invasion of the enemy from the territory of Belarus, engineering barriers, fortifications and setting up remote video surveillance systems are being built.”

The statement further said Zelenskyy inspected an observation post and a two-level trench system on the border, and border officials showed how surveillance of the border is carried out with the help of remote video surveillance systems.

“The head of state was shown systems for detecting unmanned aerial vehicles,” the statement said.

Zelenskyy also spoke with personnel of the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service and presented them with awards, it noted.
