Solution in Cyprus should be based on equality

"There is a window of opportunities ahead of us. This window might take us to a solution. Cyprus is too slow to be divided; two communities can live together. We can have different political views, but the equality of two communities should be regarded as a basic principle for a solution on the island," said Schwimmer.

Pointing out that negotiations should start again for a solution, Schwimmer said that the Annan Plan was on the table and the opportunities should not be missed.

"We are determined to support measures, which inspire confidence in Cyprus. The European Council can play a key role in history books’ being written again and it can also help media and nongovernmental organizations on both sides to be closer," says Schwimmer.

The Secretary General said that he would meet with U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan in New York at the end of July, adding that they would discuss the role of the European Council in Cyprus.
