A German police report noted that 22,500 illegal immigrants were stopped at EU borders in March – more than 60% compared to the same period last year.

Most are arriving from Türkiye via Russia, not the more common Greece route.

Around four million Middle Eastern refugees are currently in Türkiye. Many have applied for a Russia visa.

The migrants then cross into Belarus, whose border with Russia has been effectively erased, before illegally crossing into the EU through Poland before travelling on toward Germany.

“The illegal use of Russian visas for travel through Russia to Belarus and then to the European Union continues,” the police said in the report.

This route is actively promoted on social networks, said the German law enforcement.

Experts say there are special planes flying from Turkey to Russia and Belarus to bring the migrants.

“(Russian dictator Vladimir) Putin and (Turkish President Recep Tayyip) Erdoğan are sending us more and more refugees,” said BILD journalist Karl Keim.
