Police Unravel Turkey’s Al Qaeda Cell

Once the intelligence units identified the attackers, a computer program was used to keep track of their many relationships and previous movements. However, the arrest of the organization’s member proved to be more difficult since they fled the country before the attack.

Istanbul’s police department discovered the telephone network the attackers used to coordinate their activities.

Police found out that the Al Qaeda cell in Turkey established seven telephone dealerships as a cover for their organization.

Feridun Ugurlu, identified by DNA tests as responsible for the attack on the British Embassy, used the phone lines of the Al Qaeda cell’s telephone dealerships’ customers.

In this manner, he was able to effectively communicate without worrying about police surveillance of any sort.

The police discovered that Ugurlu had four different phone lines using this same method. The police traced these lines and reached important members of the organization.

As a result, two high-level conspirators were arrested: Yusuf Polat, alleged to have gathered intelligence for the Synagogue attacks, and Fevzi Yitiz, alleged to have loaded the trucks with explosives.

It was stressed that these people would face justice as soon as possible.
