Papadopoulos opposes UN referee status for Cyprus question

Addressing a seminar at the Athens University, Papadopulos said he did not want to seek UN Secretary General Kofi Annan or the UN act as a referee in any future talks on reunification between the two states on the island.
“We do not agree that the UN Secretary General once again undertakes the referee duty,” he said. “National matters and matters in relation to the being of a nation can not be solved by the refereeing of a foreigner.”
The leader added that his side rejected the plan put forward by Annan to reunify the two sides on the island but did not reject the solving of the Cyprus problem or the efforts of the UN Secretary General. Papadopulos said that they continue to support the concept of a two society and two region federation.
