Dozens of Palestinian Christians in the Gaza Strip marked Holy Saturday with prayers and hymns at Saint Porphyrius Church in Gaza City’s Old City, amid a subdued atmosphere shaped by the aftermath of war.

Men and women gathered early Saturday, lighting candles and chanting hymns as church bells rang, in a spiritual scene reflecting their commitment to religious traditions despite difficult conditions, an Anadolu correspondent reported.

Holy Saturday, known as “Sabt al-Nour” in Eastern Christian tradition, precedes the most significant Christian holiday. Orthodox Christians are set to celebrate Easter on April 12, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, according to their beliefs.

This year’s observance comes under a notably reduced festive atmosphere, the first since a ceasefire agreement took effect on Oct. 10, 2025, following two years of devastating war in the enclave.

Participants expressed hope that Easter would serve as a symbol of peace and love across Palestine and the world, particularly in Gaza, which has endured extensive destruction.
