Opposition calls for ban on Turkish drivers in Iraq

The government should step in to halt the growing number of Turkish nationals, especially truck drivers carrying cargoes for coalition forces, being killed in Iraq, Oguz Oyan, the deputy secretary general of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), said on Sunday.
One measure that could be taken was to stop Turkish drivers entering Iraq, with their vehicles being driven by Iraqi nationals once they crossed the border, he said.
“The government should launch initiatives to prevent attacks on Turkish drivers in Iraq,” said Oyan. “Trucks should be handed over to Iraqi drivers after they cross to border.”
Oyan’s call came after another Turkish driver, identified as Adil Abdullah, was killed in Northern Iraq late Saturday. Abdullah was reportedly beaten by attackers and then shot repeatedly. He was the sixth Turkish truck driver to be killed in the region in less than two weeks.
