New draft law gives priority to religious schools

Addressing the opening ceremony of the new education period, Alkis said, “The Interuniversities Council carries out the studies with the National Education Minister and the representatives of the ministry.”

“This regulation leaves the current education system out of time and gives priorities to the religious schools. It would have negative affect on the country’s future,” he said.

UNIVERSITIES’ AUTONOMY IS VIOLATED

Stating that the university being the only responsible to determine the student criteria is the most important feature of its autonomy, Alkis said, “Despite this reality, the Constitution’s article no.130 and no.131, the legal rights of the universities are removed and transferred to the National Education Ministry. As a result, the autonomy of the universities will be left.”

Alkis said that the draft has to be taken back before it arrives to the Parliament General Council and rehandled in line with the Constitution.
