Here’s a rundown of all the news you need to start your Sunday, including the coronation of King Charles III, an attack on the Turkish ambassador’s vehicle in Sudan, and deadly floods in Congo.

  • King Charles III, Queen Camilla crowned in historic ceremony

King Charles III and Queen Camilla were officially crowned in a ceremony at London’s Westminster Abbey, the first coronation since that of his late mother, the long-reigning Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953.

Despite heavy rain, people flocked to witness the historical event, with over 2,200 distinguished figures, including members of the royal family, representatives from 203 countries, and around 100 heads of state, present at the ceremony.

British police also arrested at least 26 anti-monarchy protesters in London.

  • Gunfire strikes vehicle of Turkish ambassador in conflict-torn Sudan

The official vehicle of Türkiye’s ambassador to Sudan came under gunfire, as the African country has been suffering from clashes between the army and a paramilitary group since April 15.

No casualties were reported in the wake of gunfire hitting Ismail Cobanoglu’s vehicle, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.

Sudan’s warring factions pointed fingers at each other for the assault on the diplomatic vehicle.

  • Over 200 dead in Congo floods

More than 200 people have lost their lives as a result of floods and landslides in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with many more still missing, according to local authorities.

The disaster took place Kalehe in the South Kivu province on Thursday as heavy rainfall led rivers to overflow.

  • A gunman killed at least eight people at a mall in Allen, Texas, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Dallas. The shooter was shot and killed by police.

  • Miami Grand Prix: Red Bull’s Perez takes the pole

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez grabbed the pole position for Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix in Formula One.

Perez secured the top spot in the race after defeating his rivals in the third qualifying session.

  • Real Madrid crowned Copa del Rey champions for 20th time

Real Madrid won their 20th Copa del Rey with a 2-1 victory over Osasuna in the 2023 final.

Brazilian winger Rodrygo Goes struck twice in the victory for the Madrid side.
