Macron to face Le Pen in French election runoff: Projections


President Emmanuel Macron and the far-right leader Marine Le Pen come out on top after the first round of the French presidential vote, according to initial projections.

French President Emmanuel Macron and far-right leader Marine Le Pen came out on top of France’s first-round presidential election, qualifying for the April 24 runoff, according to initial projections.

Macron came in ahead of Le Pen in the first round, according to separate estimates by pollsters Ifop, OpinionWay, Elabe and Ipsos published on Sunday.

Macron won 28.1 to 29.5 percent of votes, while Le Pen won 23.3 to 24.4 percent of voter support, they projected.
