An airline has banned a passenger for life after a plane was forced to divert to another country due to the man’s “disgraceful” behaviour on board a flight to Turkey.

The 29-year-old, from Govan in Glasgow, was said to have behaved in an “appalling fashion” which led to him being restrained by the plane’s crew and fellow passengers.

His “unacceptable behaviour” reportedly included the illicit consumption of alcohol, which is prohibited on board, as well as physical and verbal aggression.

Jet2 said crew on the Glasgow to Dalaman flight, which took off on Tuesday, had “no choice” but to divert to Sofia Airport in Bulgaria so that the man could be offloaded to police.

The plane eventually arrived in Turkey two hours later than scheduled.

Jet2 said it intends to “vigorously pursue” the man for the recovery of all costs incurred by the diversion. He has also been banned from flying with the airline for life.

Phil Ward, managing director of Jet2.com, said: “[The man] behaved in a disgraceful fashion, causing unnecessary distress to others onboard.

“As a family-friendly airline we take a zero-tolerance approach to this behaviour, and we would like to apologise to other customers and our colleagues for any upset caused.

“Our highly trained crew, along with a number of other customers, acted to restrain [the man] and we would like to sincerely thank them for their actions, however this simply should not be happening.”
