The newspaper wrote that the conditions in the report presented to Turkey were ‘very difficult’ and recorded that discussions for membership would not start without these conditions.

The newspaper wrote about a sentiment in some circles that Turkey could never be a part of Europe and commented that the Union should be honest with Turkey.

The newspaper defended that the historical and cultural differences between Turkey and other European countries were too great, and clarified that the Union could give Turkey special status with specific priorities instead of full membership.

The Italian Corriere della Sera newspaper noted Turkey’s increasing population and said that this situation would make it more difficult to accept Turkey’s membership.

It was also noted that Italy, the E.U. Term President, was preparing to make a suggestion on the subject.
