‘Denktas will be The President of United Cyprus’

Gul then praised Denktas’ manner during the New York talks, saying, ‘if Denktas was not like that then the atmosphere of unity would not be dominant today. He has a historic role in that sense.’ Minister Gul also reportedly commented that, “Someday Mr. Denktas will be the president of United Cyprus.”

Gul then stated that because a certain agreements were made in New York, a referendum would be held in Cyprus regardless of whether or not the Greeks tried to use diversionary tactics again. Minister Gul remained cautious in his comments about speculation that the leaders who contributed to a Cyprus agreement would receive the Nobel Peace Prize, saying, “There is still much to do.”

Gul also showed a similar approach in the issue of approving the agreement to be reached in Cyprus in the Parliamentary. The Foreign Minister stated that Annan demanded from them a guarantee that they would take the agreement in Cyprus to the parliamentary. Gul responded affirmatively, and said, “If any agreement is reached then the issue will be presented to the Parliamentary after the referendum in the island.” Minister Gul added however, that nobody could guarantee the decision to be given by the parliamentary. . Minister Gul noted that EU Commission President Romano Prodi gave necessary guarantees to Turkish government that an agreement would be reached on Cyprus according to Acquis communitaire.
