Cheniere to deliver LNG to Bulgaria via terminal in Turkey

April 10 (SeeNews) – Bulgaria will this week take delivery of the first tanker of liquefied natural gas (LNG) via a terminal in Turkey, under an agreement between Bulgargaz and its Turkish counterpart Botas, the Bulgarian public gas supplier said on Monday.

The LNG will be supplied by US company Cheniere, which was the winner of an auction launched by Bulgargaz in September to supply gas to Bulgaria in 2023, Bulgargaz said in an emailed statement.

The tanker will dock at the Marmara Ereglisi LNG import terminal and storage facility in northwestern Turkey on Thursday.

One of the conditions of the auction was that the supplies must originate from countries on which no sanctions, embargo or trade restrictions are imposed.

In February, Bulgargaz called a public tender for the supply of 500,000 MWh of LNG in April via a terminal in Turkey. This move followed an agreement signed in January between Bulgargaz and Botas, which paved the way for LNG deliveries to Bulgaria via the Turkish terminals and gas infrastructure.

Bulgaria has been covering a third of its energy consumption needs with pipeline gas from Azerbaijan delivered via the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector, which became operational in October and which has a current capacity of 3 billion cubic metres annually.
