Caught in the Middle: Turkey’s Position Amidst Russia’s War on Ukraine

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine poses a new and increasingly complex set of challenges for Turkey. So far, Turkey has been mostly convergent with its Western allies in supporting Ukraine, while avoiding burning bridges with Russia. But as Turkey tries to leverage its regional standing to facilitate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, its exposure to Russia on multiple fronts and its burgeoning cooperation with Ukraine present Turkey with difficult choices.

How will Ankara continue to navigate these challenging dynamics, and how is Turkey’s posture in relation to the war in Ukraine perceived by its traditional allies and partners in the West?

Join Carnegie for a special event with introductory remarks from the Ukrainian Ambassador to Turkey, H.E. Vasyl Bodnar, to be followed by expert views from Tacan Ildem, Hümeyra Pamuk, and Bruno Tertrais in conversation with Alper Coşkun on Russia’s war in Ukraine and implications for Turkey.
