Calls Grow for Change in Turkey’s Main Opposition Party


As President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his supporters celebrate his election victory, his main rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, and the main opposition Republican People’s Party CHP face a challenge following their humiliating defeat in last month’s general and presidential elections.

The public, some circles in the party as well as experts hold Kilicdaroglu responsible for the defeat and say he must leave and allow new blood in his party.

Istanbul’s popular mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, also vice-presidential candidate in the May elections, is leading the initiative.

“Change is essential. It can be [done] … by coming back from some mistakes,” Imamoglu said on June 14.
