We don’t want Turkey, poll says

According to acting Minister of European Affairs Bertel Haarder, the popular resistance isn’t surprising, but won’t spur the Government to change its stance on Turkey and the EU.

Turkish citizens living in Denmark have expressed their dismay at the results of the poll. Masters-degree scholar Hüseyin Duygu was tortured and jailed for openly criticising the Turkish regime.

‘Ever since I had to flee, there’s been tremendous progress for democracy, human rights and protection of minorities. If Turkey is rejected, things could quickly turn around again,’ said Duygu.

The Danish poll revealed a correlation between income, education, and support for Turkish EU membership: the greater the income and education, the greater the resistance to Turkey. On the other hand, the Vilstrup poll revealed the accession of Eastern European countries to the EU enjoys tremendous popular support in Denmark, with 58 percent of respondents supporting the plan, compared with just 22 percent against.
