WAN Congress Starts in Istanbul

Recognizing that 2004 is a significant year for Turkey, Hong said, "This year will be a year for Turkey to take important steps toward discussing membership in the European Union. Modern Turkey’s potential role in the world is crucially important. In countries populated with Muslims, there are many limitations. Turkey’s membership is important in this perspective."

The Congress will end on June 2.

What is WAN?

The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) is a non-government organization for journalism in which more than 18,000 newspapers in 100 countries are represented. Its main goal is to advocate for the freedom of the press and to assist newspapers in protecting their economic freedom as an indispensable condition of freedom of the press. WAN is the only non-government organization with the right to represent the newspaper industry at the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU). WAN’s President is Dr. Seok Hyun Hong. Aydin Dogan, President of Dogan Holding in Turkey, is a member of the executive board.
