Verheugen Speaks Like an Advocate of Turkey

Verheugen emphasized during a press meeting in Germany that the German parties should discuss Turkey’s membership without harming the interests of Europe. "A successful reform process in Turkey benefits Europe. Regardless of our political stance, Turkey’s determination to achieve the reforms must unite us all. This is important for security and the future of Europe. Therefore, discussions should not harm Turkey’s reform process," said the Commissioner.

Verheugen disclosed that the European Commission would prepare the progress report on Turkey after a detailed examination. He added that the Commission would try to complete the report by autumn. Verhugen said he could foresee starting membership discussions if it appears that Turkey meets the political criteria. He assured that the report would be objective and neutral in nature.
