Verheugen: Greek Cypriots Can Veto Turkey
Verheugen called on both parties in Cyprus to resume talks on the basis of the Annan Plan. Verheugen said that if no solution was attained before May 2004 – the accession date for Greek Cyprus to EU- some additional problems would emerge. On the veto power, that Greek Cypriots would get in May 2004, Verheugen said; Yes this is the case. Of course they can use this power. Not only in the theoretical but also in the practical sense. After Cyprus’ accession to EU on May 1, 2004 the European law will be considered as pending in the north of the island, and this will be problematic. Because the Greek Cypriot Administration will have the right to veto the commencement of talks with Turkey.
