Uzbek warlord campaigns for Afghan elections

Afghan presidential candidates continue their election campaigns as concerns for election security grows.

Gen.Rashid Dostum, Uzbek warlord and presidential candidate for November’s Afghan elections addressed thousands of Afghans in a rally held in the city of Shiberghan on Tuesday.

Dostum urged the people not to be influenced by anyone whilst voting. He said "I am not here for your votes. I want you to vote for the one who works and exerts effort for this country."

General Dostum highlighted that he would continue to serve Afghanistan just as he served to it as part of the Northern Alliance in the past.

Dostum was one of the key figures in the US war against the Taliban in Afghanistan. As the leader of the second largest party in the Northern Alliance he helped to topple the Taliban regime in 2001.

He resigned as the adviser to the incumbent president Hamid Karzai in order to compete for the presidency.
