US warns Turkey not to enter N. Iraq

Speaking on American television, Powell said that there was a real danger of clashes between Northern Iraqi Kurds and Turkish forces if the latter entered the region.
“We have made it clear that the situation there is volatile, and it would be better if there were no Turkish forces in as part of any military operation that might take place,” the Secretary of State said.
While acknowledging that Turkey had concerns over possible developments in the region, Powell said that it would be better if Turkish forces did not cross the border.
“They are concerned about that area, but they also know that we don’t want to see anything happen that would precipitate a crisis between Turkey and the Kurdish populations in Northern Iraq,” he said.
