US secretary of state to travel to Sweden, Norway, Finland next week

TORONTO

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Sweden, Norway, and Finland next week to deepen transatlantic cooperation on top national security and economic matters, said State Department on Friday.

“Blinken will travel to Luleå, Sweden May 29-31, where he will co-chair, along with Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and US Trade Representative Tai, the fourth meeting of the US-EU Trade and Technology Council to accelerate the global clean tech transition,” Spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

The objectives of the meeting are to advance the global clean tech transition, hold Russia accountable for war in Ukraine, provide assistance to Ukraine, and foster increased trade and technology cooperation, according to the statement.

The top diplomat will also meet with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom.

Blinken will be in Oslo, Norway from May 31-June 1, where he will attend an informal meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs to discuss preparations for the NATO Summit in Vilnius in July, support for Ukraine, and other transatlantic priorities with allies.

He will also meet with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt, said the statement.

On June 1-2, Blinken will be in Helsinki, Finland, where he will discuss bilateral relationship with the newest NATO ally of the US.

He will meet Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin and Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto on Friday.

Blinken will make a speech in Helsinki to emphasize how Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is “a strategic failure” and the continued efforts of US to support Ukraine’s defense of its territory, sovereignty, and democracy to attain a just and sustainable peace.
