US Keeps 480 Nuclear Weapons in European Countries

The New York Times commented that these figures are twice former estimates of the numbers and that the report prepared by the independent Natural Resources Defense Council advocated that the existence of those weapons damaged efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

Pointing out that the US military authorities insisted that nuclear weapon stock was less than the mentioned amount, the New York Times wrote that even those authorities accepted the existence of US nuclear weapons in the region for deterrence of terrorist groups and states that might threaten US and its allies by the non-conventional weapons.

Reportedly, the existence of the nuclear weapons also caused concern among members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
