US examines Turkey’s proposals on Cyprus

WASHINGTON (AA) – The US administration started to examine Turkey’s amendment proposals on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s Cyprus plan.

The US sources said that Turkey’s offers were conveyed to US State Department’s Special Envoy for Cyprus, Thomas Weston, last week. They stated that the US administration started to examine these proposals last Friday.

The observers in Washington pointed out that US Secretary of State Colin Powell had pledged Ankara that the US would spend effort on meeting Turkey’s amendment demands as far as possible.

Turkey and Greece, as guarantor states, will involve the peace process between March 22-29 to reach a deal on the disagreed parts in the negotiations continuing between the Turkish and Greek Cypriots in Lefkosa. If the parties fail to reach an agreement even after the motherland countries’ intervention, Annan will fill the remaining gaps.

Both sides will then hold referenda on the final text prepared by Annan.
