UN Warns Israel About Human Rights

The committee observes the social attitudes of countries accepting the 1969 international charter for the abolishment of any kind of racism. It is demanding that Israel, who signed the agreement in 1979, reconsider its policies.

The committee had called an urgent meeting to discuss the law. They have requested that Israel present a detailed report to the committee in December before the main panel to be held next year. Israel’s UN Representative Yaakov Levy in Geneva, accused the committee of displaying a prejudiced approach to Israel and that the law was already being examined in the Supreme Court.

Planned to be implemented within a year, the law denies residence to Palestinians married to Israelis living in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Israeli authorities argue that since 1993, more than 100,000 Palestinians received residence permission and that this created a security risk. The Israel government believes that the law will be beneficial in preventing terrorist attacks.
