UN spokesman: "Situation in Darfur worsens"

UN Sudan spokesman George Somewill held a press conference in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum on Wednesday about the latest situation in the troubled region of Darfur.

Following the press conference, Somewill told IHA, "The situation of the people in the camps is very serious. There’s illness, sickness, things like malaria. There are stomach infections, bloody diarrhoea. Young children are dying of chest infections. That’s why we have insecurity. It is very worrying because it means that the people who are desperately in need of assistance, of medical help and food, they need all of that humanitarian assistance and they are not able to get it."

On rumours that the Sudanese troops drove the people in the camps out, Somewill said, "They forced them to relocate to another camp. They did not force them out. It is very unusual."
