Ukraine denies Russia’s claims of capturing village in Dnipropetrovsk region
ISTANBUL
Kyiv on Wednesday denied Moscow’s claims that its forces crossed into its Dnipropetrovsk region and took control of a settlement for the first time since the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022.
Ukraine’s General Staff claimed on Telegram that its forces “continue to restrain” intense Russian attempts to breach the administrative border between the Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
The statement was issued in response to a claim made by a Russian official on Monday about taking over a settlement in the region, which has been regularly targeted by Russian airstrikes throughout the conflict, now in its fourth year.
Vladimir Rogov, a pro-Russian official, told state news agency RIA on Monday that Russian troops had driven Ukrainian forces out of the village of Dachne, which is less than a kilometer (0.6 miles) from Dnipropetrovsk’s administrative border with eastern Donetsk.
A day earlier, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that its forces had taken control of the village of Novoukrainka, which is about 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) southeast of Dachne.
In late May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that the Russian army is attempting to cross into the Dnipropetrovsk region.
According to the General Staff statement, a small Russian reconnaissance group was able to briefly enter Dachne a few days ago before being eliminated by Ukrainian forces. It also claimed that two Russian servicemen were captured as prisoners of war in a subsequent assault.
“Therefore, the reports … about the seizure of a bridgehead in the Dnipropetrovsk region do not correspond to reality. Dachne remains under the control of the Ukrainian Defense Forces,” it added.
Russian authorities have not commented on Ukraine’s claims, and independent verification of the claims is difficult due to the ongoing conflict.
