UK tourists going to Spain and Turkey warned of April deadline

UK holidaymakers who have booked trips to Spain and Turkey have been warned about an upcoming deadline in April.

The UK government has announced new passport fees this week, and tourists with holidays planned in the next few months need to be aware of a fast-approaching deadline. From April 11, the cost to apply for a new passport will go up.

If your passport is close to its expiry date, you’re being encouraged to renew it before that date to avoid paying more. The price for a standard online application will go from £82.50 to £88.50, and the cost for children’s passports will increase from £53.30 to £57.50.

The cost of postal applications will also rise, going from £93 to £100 for adults and from £64 to £69 for kids. British people living abroad will also be affected, as the cost of a standard paper application from overseas will go up to £112.50 for adults and £77 for children.

These prices include the cost of renewing your passport. The government has said that these price increases will ‘help ensure that income from these applications better meets the cost of delivering passport and associated operations’ and reduce the need for funding from taxes, reports Birmingham Live.

If you’ve got a holiday booked this summer, remember to factor in the time it takes to get a new passport. Right now, it takes about three weeks from when you apply to when your passport arrives.

Even if your passport hasn’t expired yet, you might still need to renew it before you go on holiday. This depends on where you’re going.

For example, Spain needs visitors to have at least three months left on their passports when they’re due to leave. In Turkey, tourists’ passports must have at least 150 days, or five months, left until they expire from the date they arrive.
