Key points

  • On 6 February 2023, two powerful earthquakes hit southeastern Türkiye, resulting in over 45 000 deaths and 115 000 injuries, and causing USD 6.3 billion worth of damages to the agriculture sector.

  • The earthquake-affected area is known as Türkiye’s “fertile crescent”, accounting for approximately 15.3 percent of the country’s total agricultural gross domestic product, and employing 14 percent of its farmers.

  • In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) scaled up its emergency response and launched its three-year Earthquake Response and Recovery Plan (ERRP) with the overall objective of maintaining food production and availability by restoring critical agrifood systems and rural livelihoods.

  • During the first phase of the ERRP, FAO implemented immediate-term interventions aimed at meeting the most pressing needs of the affected communities and addressing market disruptions. The Organization is now moving towards resilience building in the medium and long term to support the recovery of the agriculture sector and restoration of rural livelihoods under the ERRP.
