Türkiye in Talks to Loan Regasification Ship to Morocco

Türkiye is negotiating with Morocco on renting out a regasification ship, vital for transferring Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) by sea, Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Thursday, “Gulf Business” reported.

Bayraktar told broadcaster CNN Turk that Türkiye recently started using its floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) ships for export purposes. He referred to a May accord made with Egypt to time charter its FSRU ships.

“There is something especially with Egypt now. We are also discussing such a project with Morocco because the summer months are also a period when their gas needs increase, and for us, the summertime is when we consume 30% of our gas,” he said.

Bayraktar did not provide further details on the talks with Morocco or the existing time charter with Egypt.

The discussions reflect Türkiye’s push to use its LNG infrastructure not only for domestic demand but also to position itself as an energy hub in the region.

Morocco, which relies on energy imports to meet most of its needs, faces higher demand during the summer months, making the potential deal a strategic step for both sides.
