Türkiye Earthquake Response 2023: Hatay Humanitarian Snapshot, As of 08 June 2023 – Türkiye
Situation Update
There are plans for 52,000 container homes with the possibility of increasing to 65,000. Availability of land to set up those sites is a problem.
Authorities are also working to prioritize beneficiaries according to vulnerability criteria for allocation of prefabricated house and planning the construction of 10,000 new homes in Iskenderun. The authorities are consolidating informal and formal tent sites to provide better services, while moving people to container cities. Refugees¹ are permitted to apply for containers, but reportedly no refugees had moved to containers at the time of writing. Partners are engaging with refugees and other communities regarding relocation.
Challenges have been observed relating to the installation of business office containers, delays in the distribution and installation of WASH services, and difficulties in managing hygiene kit distributions and implementing sanitation solutions. Misuse and damage of latrines and showers are observed by partners.
There are shortages of container accommodation for new health-care staff arriving in the province, which may affect the scale up of health-care services.
There is a transition to providing food commodities, communal kitchen facilities, kitchen utensils, where appropriate, such as in container cities, where units have kitchens. The goal is to transition from hot meals to food baskets or a voucher system. The number of meals distributed daily will reduce from 700,000 to between 200,000 and 250,000 in July.
Mosquitoes and flies are a problem in Antakya, caused by the continued existence of rubble and challenges to waste management, as well as rising temperatures. Associated health conditions caused by vector-borne illness are being reported.
School attendance – which is not compulsory at the moment – has been very low due to the lack of transportation and concerns about entering potentially unsafe buildings.
