Türkiye develops new fig with high export potential
Türkiye has introduced a new dried fig variety, “Siyah Orak” (Black Sickle), through a collaborative research effort aimed at improving fig cultivation with a focus on health-related benefits. The initiative involved the Erbeyli Fig Research Institute (part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry), Ege University, and the Izmir Institute of Technology, and was supported by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK).
The Siyah Orak fig contains high levels of phenolic compounds and anthocyanins, which are linked to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers noted that the variety also shows greater resistance to aflatoxins—mold-related toxins that have posed challenges for dried fruit exports.
Türkiye currently exports around 67,000 metric tons of dried figs annually, primarily of the Sarılop variety grown in the Aydın and Izmir regions. These exports generated roughly $300 million in 2023, according to the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council Foundation (INC).
The Siyah Orak fig is being positioned as a complementary addition to existing production rather than a replacement. Its distinct characteristics, including darker color, lower sugar levels, and higher antioxidant content, may appeal to different market segments. Sapling production using tissue culture techniques is underway, with initial plantings expected to cover around 1,000 acres. Expansion will take place via contract farming models, with growers receiving technical and financial support.
Researchers suggest that the Siyah Orak variety could help Türkiye access markets that currently import black fig varieties, such as the U.S. Black Mission fig. With sufficient adoption, national dried fig output could potentially increase from 70,000 to 100,000 tons over the next decade.
Türkiye accounted for approximately 49% of global dried fig exports in 2023, according to the INC. The introduction of new varieties like Siyah Orak is part of broader efforts to support production diversification and meet evolving international market demands.
