Gazi Yasargil, who was dubbed the “Neurosurgeon of the Century (1950–2000)” by the journal Neurosurgery in 1999, has died at the age of 99, the Turkish Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.
Born in 1925 in Lice, Türkiye, Yasargil became one of the most influential figures in the history of neurosurgery. He is widely credited with pioneering microneurosurgery, a technique that transformed the field by enabling surgeons to operate on delicate brain structures with unprecedented precision. His innovations, including the development of the surgical microscope and microsurgical instruments, have become standard practice in neurosurgical procedures worldwide.
