Turkish parliament to debate sending troops to Iraq
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is expected Tuesday to examine the question of a military deployment.
Parliament could be re-convened Wednesday to vote on a government motion authorising the deployment, AKP parliamentary sources said.
The Turkish government and powerful army favour sending troops. Parliament must approve any decision on sending troops abroad.
According to press reports, Erdogan wants the green light from parliament to send some 10,000 men to Iraq ahead of an AKP party congress next Sunday, October 12.
He apppears to be hoping to frustrate opposition to the project from within his own party.
