New Delhi: The relations between Israel and Turkey are becoming increasingly strained. Following the capture of territory by Turkish-backed HTS rebels in Syria, Turkey’s military presence in the region is growing strategically. Turkish forces and their allied groups are continuously targeting the Kurds in Syria. These are the same Kurds under the protection of 2,000 U.S. troops.

Now, these Kurds have sought help from Israel. Relations between Turkey and Israel had already plummeted following Israel’s attacks on Gaza, but recent developments in Syria have escalated the risk of direct military confrontation between the two nations. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also been fueling tensions by making anti-Israel statements in his country.

According to Turkey, the Kurds pose a threat to its security because they aim to establish a separate nation, which includes plans to incorporate Turkish territories. Additionally, on Wednesday, thousands of Turks protested against Israel in Istanbul, expressing support for Hamas. Since the start of the Gaza war, the geopolitical landscape of the entire Middle East has been shifting.

Dr. Hay Eytan Cohen, a Turkey affairs expert at Tel Aviv University in Israel, stated that initially, Erdogan believed Israel’s attack on Hamas was just another cycle of violence. However, a few weeks later, Turkey realized that Israel had launched a full-scale war against Hamas.

Erdogan is inspired by the Muslim Brotherhood

Cohen stated that Erdogan is also inspired by the same ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood that Hamas follows. Erdogan is the one who worsened relations with Israel. He mentioned that Israel has had a secret friendship with Syria’s Kurds. With the help of the Kurds, Israel could deliver a strong response to Turkey. After the departure of Bashar al-Assad, Turkey sees a big opportunity in Syria. The shared border between Syria and Israel could pose a future threat to the Jewish nation. He further noted that while the Syria-Israel border had been peaceful for years, tensions might rise now as Turkey approaches Israel’s border.
