Turkey’s PM escaped August suicide attack
The would-be assailant, Celal Yayla, a militant with a clandestine Marxist organisation arrested last month in possession of explosives, said he was one of a two-man commando team that was aiming to assassinate Erdogan during the August 10 wedding celebrations in an Istanbul conference hall. Yayla told police he was to have dressed like a bodyguard, approached Erdogan and exploded explosives strapped to his body. The attack failed to materialise because of the level of security around the Turkish premier, Milliyet said, adding that three other members of the Marxist group were being questioned as part of the investigation.
