Turkey’s Main Rival to Erdogan Faces Jail Time in New Indictment

Turkey is seeking more than seven years in prison for Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu over allegedly criminal comments he made about the city’s chief prosecutor, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Imamoglu, from the main opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, represents about 16 million people in Turkey’s largest city. He’s widely touted by supporters as a challenger to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the national level after defeating the latter’s party in both the 2019 and 2024 mayoral elections.
