Turkey’s Gul: Taiwan would be a model for Cyprus

Gul declared that they use a ‘Taiwan model’ when dealing with Cyprus. The ‘Taiwan Model’ refers to running economic relations without politic recognition. In response to questions relating to the demands made on Turkey in regard to Cyprus, The European Union and Incirlik American Base, Gul said that Turkey has exerted every effort in an attempt to reach a solution in Cyprus. According to the information given, Gul addressed critics regarding the recognition of Greek Cyprus and said: "Much like Taiwan, though there will not be political recognition, a formula, in which economic relations continue, will be created."Turkey Gives an Incirlik List to USThe foreign affairs minister exemplified the US’s close economic relations with Taiwan despite the US not politically recognizing Taiwan. He said that political relations with Taiwan have been run via China. Similarly, when considering political issues relating to Greek Cyprus, we refer to Greece. ." Gul also talked about the US’ demands in regard to Incirlik Base and said: "We do not have to meet every demand." He stressed that the Turkish side will not pursue submissive politics, "We have presented a list outlining what we find acceptable and unacceptable… It would not be right to declare it here," said Gul.
