Turkey will be needed

The Kurds in northern Iraq and southern Turkey are going to want to carve up territory for the homeland they envision as Kurdistan. As President Bush has often pointed out, however, the United States is not in the business of nation-building.
The coalition forces are in Iraq to overthrow a dictator and end the threat of his weapons of mass destruction. The troops are not there to divide Iraq into pieces and hand out new countries to rebels.
Both the United States and Great Britain have pledged to maintain the territorial integrity of Iraq. The northern border with Turkey must be maintained.
Turkish leaders are facing a citizenry that is 94 percent against the war. If we truly want to promote democracy in the Middle East, we do have to accept those instances when the vote goes against us.
And we also can’t afford to hold grudges against longtime allies whose help we will need after the war.
