Turkey Still Struggles with Torture
"The information we received about torture was different," said European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Gunter Verheugen. Despite that Turkey’s Human Rights Ministry has regularly mentioned torture in the first few lines of its monthly reports, Verheugen believes that Turkey submitted incorrect information to the EU.
Turkey’s Human Rights Ministry, for the past seven months, has consistently rated ‘torture’ as a primary obstacle toward a greater practice of human rights. Only once, in May, did ‘torture’ fall out of the Human Rights Ministry’s top 5 concerns.
