Turkey sees any potential war in Iran as a threat

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s comments came during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Kemal Harrazi in the Malaysian city of Phuket Monday and have only just been made public. Erdogan said that Turkey was uncomfortable with recent US statements on Iran and called on Tehran to comply with the International Atom Energy Organisation by allowing full access to its nuclear facilities. Washington has claimed that Iran is working to produce nuclear weapons, claims rejected by Tehran.
Erdogan said that any new conflict in the region posed a threat to Turkey.
“We do not want a conflict or tension in the region. Any possibility of war is threat for us,” Erdogan was reported as saying to Harrazi.
During their meeting, which came while Erdogan was touring countries in southern Asia hit by the December 26 tsunami, Harrazi said that Tehran was not opposed to having its nuclear energy program monitored and that the program was for peaceful purposes.
Harrazi in reference to the Iraqi election stressed the importance of Sunni participation in democratic process and that without it the legitimacy of the soon to be drafted constitution would be questionable.
