Turkey retained the top spot

Macedonia almost equalized the match just before time with an attempt from Poleski that went just wide of the net. England visit Turkey in October for a clash that could decide who wins the group and automatic qualification for the finals in Portugal.

Michael Owen started his 50th cap and toped the day off with two goals helping England come back from a two goal set back. England won its match with Slovakia 2-1.

Slovakia took the lead a half an hour in to the game but had no answer for England the rest of the match.

Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men started slow but pulled even after the 62nd minute. Owen then netted the game winner eleven minute later.

The win keeps England in second just behind group leaders Turkey, who have 15 points from six games after their 3-2 win over Macedonia earlier on Wednesday. Eriksson’s side, who travel to Turkey in their final qualifier, have 13 points from five matches.
