Turkey resurrects Middle East Irrigation Plan

If the treaty with Israel goes ahead as planned, 50 million cubic meters of water would be sold annually to Israel. In total, five billion cubic meters of water, of which about half comes form Manavgat, has been flowing in vain from Turkey into the Mediterranean.

The value of Turkey’s water resources has been on the rise because the Middle East is faced with a severe drought threat in 20 years. In light of this, Ankara wishes to sell water to the Gulf States in addition to Israel.

Kuwait has attempted to solve its water problem with a treaty signed with Iran. As a result of the treaty 300 million cubic meters of water would be sold to Kuwait from the Karun River of Iran.
