Turkey postponed customs union deal with TRNC

“The agreement is ready but we will wait for the right time,” he told reporters.
The agreement is believed to have been deferred as a result of criticism levelled at Turkey over the plan. The proposed customs union has been strongly opposed by Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration, who claim it infringes on the sovereignty of the Cypriot state as they perceive it.
However, Şener denied that the delay was due to criticism from the Greek Cypriot side, adding that technical delegations were still working on the deal.
“There is the need for further work on some details on technical issues,” he said. “However, in such a bilateral deal there is the political will if both sides are behind it.”
