Turkey: Planned power outages to occur in parts of Istanbul March 12
Event
Utility providers Istanbul Anatolian Side Electricity Distribution Company (AYEDAS) and Bosphorus Electricity Distribution Company (BEDAS) have announced plans to cut power in parts of Istanbul March 12 for planned maintenance work. Many areas in Istanbul will experience electricity disruptions over various time frames between 00:01 and 22:00. Both central and outlying districts will be impacted, including Arnavutkoy, Bagcilar, Bahcelievler, Bayrampasa, Cekmekoy, Kartal, Kagithane, Silivri, Esenyurt, Fatih, Maltepe, Pendik, and Zeytinburnu. The power outages will last for 1-8 hours, depending on location.
Business and telecommunications disruptions are possible in areas subject to power outages; cellular and mobile services could be affected. Malfunctioning traffic signals could result in road transport disruptions. Trains may also experience delays if outages impact signaling devices or overhead wires. Additionally, power outages could result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as ATMs and filling stations. Water supply outages or decreases in water pressure may occur in areas that rely on electrical pumps for water flow.
There is an increased security threat during power outages. Power cuts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase.
Advice
Charge mobile and communication devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Plan for road travel delays due to possible malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights in affected areas; exercise caution when driving in recently impacted areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working. Park vehicles in secure areas. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices where necessary.
